IMSOUANE - Girls Surf Trip to Morocco
When: November.
The best time to surf in Morocco is between late September and April. Although Imsouane is known for having good conditions for surfing throughout the year.
Team: 3 friends
Travel purpose: Surf. Improving turns.
Weather: Perfect. Sunny all the time. Tee shirts during the day. Warm jumpers at night.
Where to stay - Location:
Imsouane is a tiny little town. It sits almost halfway between Essaouira and Agadir. Once upon a time, it was just a fishing village. Now it's a mix of this fishing village and a surfers village. You don't come here to find lively and festive nightlife.
Imsouane Bay is the ideal place to stay, facing the sea
Where to sleep:
We will just describe there the 2 places we tested.
Imi Bay : The best vibe in the village. Nice Deco, perfect location. You have a pool on the rooftop. Breakfast is yummy. Staff super friendly. They also have a surfshop/surfschool where you can rent boards (quite expensive but very good quiver). Mario who was managing the surf school was top.
O Surf Experience: Beautiful place. Amazing views onto the spot. The location is ideal. Just be careful if you spend several nights, they won't clean your room if you don't ask for it! Also, the Internet was not working as smoothly as in Imi Bay. Be aware of that if you need to work in between two surf sessions. Breakfast is delicious.
About surfing there:
The Bay is the point break with a peeling right-hand wave that can go on for 700m on a good day.
Soft Sand.
We had a big swell during the week. Reading MSW or any other surf forecast, it was worrying as 2 to 4 meters waves were predicted. But, in the end, the bay is protecting and we ended up with consistent 1 to 2 meters waves, fairly easy to take (with longboards).
For longboarders it's paradise. However, bear in mind that you will have to carry your board quite often. Generally, you start at one point of the bay (Click there) and end up at the opposite after taking 2 or 3 waves. There was quite a lot of current when we were there so it was not that easy to paddle behind. Just follow the crowd, go to the extreme right point, and follow the rocks to go behind. Be careful when the tide is high, you have to climb some rocks to come back which is quite a challenge with a longboard!!!)
All in all, I would say it's a perfect wave to learn to surf on or to longboard.
If you are a shortboarder and want to improve how to turn on a wave, it is not maybe the best wave as it's not pushy enough.
If you want faster and sometimes bigger, you can try out the second spot called Cathedral, on the other side of the village. We didn't try it as the swell was big and was giving huge waves in Cathedrale.
Where to eat in Imsouane:
These are the 2 places where you can easily get wine. International places.
Ola Surf House: The best in terms of cuisine. It seems to be also a very good place to stay.
Imi Bay: Very good food.
In the other restaurants, more traditional, you can generally negotiate to bring your own bottle or you can drink tea. You will find plenty of delicious ones in the village.
Imsouane is definitely a super cool place and a very nice spot! To make it perfect, if we come back, we would rather rent a car in Agadir and organise a mix with some other nearby spots like Taghazout or Essaouira.
